I need to hook up a dwell/tach meter to set my base idle on a 2002 FLHR (carb). The coil (including negative) has the sealed connectors. Where do I hook up a meter to the coil neg on this bike to check the RPM? Is it done on the diagnostic plug under the right side cover? I do not want to cut into any wires on the harness to do this.

i believe the tach (pink) wire breaks out near the instrument cluster....might be a lot of work to get to it just for that tho....

snap on makes an inductive pickup for their meters if you have one already.....

Just an update...I found an easy way to check the rpm on a carb 02+ Touring bike. (It might also work on the EFI but you cannot change the EFI idle properly without the computer.) Correct, the pink tach wire up under the nacelle/dash is a real pain to access. There is a tach signal that goes to the cruise control module harness plug under the left side cover (wire #3 pink I recall). I just put a paperclip in the harness plug #3 pink wire and hooked my tach there. 2 minutes and my idle was tip top. Thought I'd pass it on.
