i have an 81 sportster that i would like to add a tall sissy bar to.
it mounts on the side of the fender. my question is : do i put it under the plates that are there or over them? unfortunately i am not very mechanical.

You just got to bolt the sissy bars to them rods that hold the rear fender up.

Here's a picture of my ride back when I was on active duty. Back then I used it off base to cary the helmet I was required to use on base.

The frame is 1962 and I was told it was a drag bike frame. The custom shop had to weld the two things that hold the fender rods up on it.

At least that old frame took the 1980 engine without a hassle.

You ought to know that when one has to push start their ride it's harder to do it with a sissy bar on. It makes the jump into the seat harder.
