My wife, Cheryl passed on 3 Jan. After all her fighting with the botched surgery and MRSA staph infection so hard all last year, it was one of the chemo drugs in her very first treatment that took her.

I am thankful for that last, rainy and foggy ride she was able to make just after Thanksgiving. I tried to talk her out of it and she'd have none of that.

I was keeping a blog to help inform her family of her treatment status, sure ended too quickly.

I tried to read Cheryl's Blog but couldn't get through the first entry. My Mother just passed from Cancer right before Christmas, and my sister from Leukemia, less than 3 months before my Mom. Watching a loved one fight the battle is just heartwrenching. I feel for you rick. Thoughts, prayers and a bunch of hugs coming your way.

My step-kids' father died Christmas night 2 years ago of massive system failure; my mom died last Christmas from lung cancer, my step-kids' uncle died 2 days ago from mouth and throat cancer, and my sister-in-law is near death from leukemia. I empathize with you, Rick. Hang in there, buddy; time does numb the pain.

So sorry to hear of this. May she RIP. Prayers for you and your family.
I just finished reading your blog and I have tears streaming down my face. I don't know how you found the strength to do all this during which time you were also caring for her and going through the hardest time of your life. You are indeed a very special man, and your son seems to be cut from the same cloth.

Rick, I'm so sorry for your loss and want
you to know that you and your family will
be in my prayers and thoughts. I know
that nothing I can say or do right now
will ease your pain, but know this, you
have many friends who stand ready and
willing for you should you need anything
including myself. God's peace be with you.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I'm not really sure why I posted this here in the first place but all the thoughts and prayers seem to have helped me understand the why of that.

Tomorrow would have been our 23rd anniversary. So, reckon I'll afford myself one more day then gather my sad sack ass up and get on down the road.

I spoke to Cheryl's oncologist tonight and he confirmed she had a genetic defect which pretty much sealed her fate as soon as the chemo drugs were first injected. Unfortunately, the test was done too late.

So, if I can ask for anyone to take something from this, its this:

Should you or a loved one ever face something similar, ask EVERY question imaginable and get ALL info on the risks beforehand. We thought we did this.

Specifically in our case, the drug 5-fu which is a "benchmark" colon cancer drug and used for other digestive tract cancers as well is has a mortality rate of 33% when given to a person with what is known as DPD Defect.

Her oncologist said he didn't pretest due to two reasons: rarity of the problem and to avoid financial hardship over the holidays for us.

I've found this test ranges from $500 to $1100. I'd have really rather had her doc focus on all risks and leave our financial wellbeing in our hands.

Thanks again to all. I'm moving through the stages of grief and seem to have slowed in the Fucking Pissed category for a bit.

Ride Safely and enjoy those around you
