Score one for the venerable BMW R1200RT. Actually, 2 of the top 5 bikes were BMW R1200RTs.

Here are a few photos of the Iron Butt Rally winner, Jim Owen, and his BMW R1200RT. Check out the auxiliary fuel tank.

Indeed. I have not gone thru the whole write up yet but I'm sure the GL1800 was prominent -- I wonder where the closest HD was in the finish?

I need to rent one of the BMW and take a long ride to see how she feels. Cant think about driving more then a tank range at one sitting on a bike without streaching

Wide, for a pure adrenalin rush you should try the BMW S1000RR.

For sporty long distance touring -- either the R1200RT or the K1300GT will do nicely. Off paved roads, the billy goat R1200GS is popular.
