Just put new tach cable on my 72 sportster xlh 1000 (original tach)...now needle spins like crazy in circle? Any ideas why-pretty simple replacement not much you can do wrong (at least thought it was)??

am thinking it is a front wheel drive cable, maybe you did not get the cable all the way in
there is a grove in which you must have all the way in .

Hey wreckerman thanks for response cable connects at gearcase and other end at tach on the ole ironheads but did take a second look last nite n pulled both out to see if anymore cable left that could shove further in but has stop nuts to only let so much of the core of the cable come out but did give each side an straight push and connected as tight as poss..didn't get to ride her today to check it out yet..will let u know but just don't think did much good...feel is possibly in tach end but not sure what problem is worked fine before last cable spun itself in half...

memory is a bit slow , but did they not have different cables? or something with different gear at the end?
might be wrong part also are we talking the speed o or the tack , most tack's are electrical

Thinking that far back the tack was (is) mechanical

cant find parts breakout for a 72 but for a 79

No problem 72 was a while ago ..but I love my bike so stick with her..she has a duo setup. The speedo and tach sit side by side speedo on left the cables just have square core that slips in at both ends. The speedo goes down to underneath of gear case the tach goes to upper right side of gear case..all manual except wiring that goes to indicator lite and lite to see them at nite...nothing electrical related to the cables..baffling??

have a look at wear the cable goes in , there should be a small plastic gear in there that the cable drives , see if that gear is worn or broken
