baseball uniforms

With the RedSox, for example......they have white, grey and red shirts. I know they have away (grey) and home (white) uniforms. But when/why do they wear the red? Do all teams have 3 different colored uniforms?

I think all these different jerseys are a marketing ploy to make the kids want one of each color . Just another way to generate revenue in other words .. ;)

I love the Red Sox red uniforms. Gives them the older classic look!

The reason I asked is because my wife made the observation that when they do wear the red uniforms, most of the fans do too. When/how is it decided when they'll wear the red ones?
