Simple, now try to find off the shelf parts to do this LOL

The HArley aftermarket flat out sucks whats offered for this sector

My 80 inch evo got 85 hp & 45 mpg all day everyday

Now if you want some custom made part $$$$ Just call
What custom parts do I need to get?

I heard you can run a motor on cooking oil. I'm sure we could make a motor that runs on fat. I could jam a probe in my fat ass and run 1000s of miles without having to stop.

I almost cut my hair, it happened just the other day.
It was gettin' kinda long, I could've said it was in my way.
But I didn't and I wonder why, I feel like letting my freak flag fly

Could start with a split runner manifold, then some serious engine management stuff

A custom ground cam matched to the rpm range you need to be in

Something with little duration & overlap to really keep the volocity up would be the most effective first step. However you really need to have a package with exhaust & fuel delivery to really make this work

I ahve a few extra motors laying around, one a TC. Maybe I can get another project going

Let me talk to a few dudes that really know their shit, maybe we can come up with a combo & grind a cam just for you

We'll need the weight of the bike with you on it & the gears you want to run, desired cruising speed/rpm etc. You know the game

A side effect of good milage is decreased high rpm performance unless we can find or come up with a variable valve train.

I'm sure you remember my basher blue celica? Well I been treeking that thing & just got 40 mpg with it last tank on 87 octane. It's slower then heck but runs cool & no issues. This is just minor tweeks to the sensors.

My desired crusing speed is 70+. The bike and me and my usual Gear and equipment would be 1100 lbs.
And it seems to me that a Harley should easily get over 50 mpg wiithout losing any performance. Cars weigh at least twice that and cars aren't less wind resistant.

You have to factor the cost of these upgrades and determine just how much extra gas mileage will you get? Is it worth it?

Re: Harley Upgrades that Increase Gas Mileage

Some of Wides ideas do sound costly. And I'm not going to dump a ton of money into this. But I also think Wide knows what he's talking about. I'll just have to decide what I want to spend.

If I wanted be sure I got back the money I invested, I'll bet I could get over 50 mpg with a new cam and different pulleys to lower the RPM a bit. B)

I'm having a tough time finding info about this subject, but I did find an website that talks about building a usable street motor.
They touch some great topics as far as building a motor for riding rather than for an impressive dyno printout. Street motor

Re: Harley Upgrades that Increase Gas Mileage

I wouldn't make a bet that higher gearing and a cam swap will get you 50+ mpg compared to what you are getting now. I have a buddy with an '02 Ultra, which of course has the 3:15 gearing. He swapped front pulleys to gear it even higher. This year going to Daytona, he was riding solo, I was riding two-up. Our gas mileages were always with in about 2 mpg of each other. He never got better than 43 when running 75 mph or so. The difference was evident with his higher gearing in a negative way. From a 70 mph roll-on, I would pull away from him by 3 or 4 bike lengths and stay there till we hit 100. I was even sandbagged by 150+ lbs.

You can get higher mpgs outta of your bike under the right conditons, mostly going slower and easing on the gas. I went on a trip last year with the same buddy as above. We rode the Blue Ridge Parkway at 45 mph for a couple of hunderd miles. Both bikes got 54 mpg.

Ok you win, I'll just leave it like it is.
