Lets see if we can get what you do in HOT weather to help you rbike survive
I retard the timing & richin up the mixture to aviod pinging & overheating the motor. I loose a few ponies but who cares
On dressers remove the lowers & let that baby breath

Great topic wide,
this is my first year with this bike but I'm going to change to straight 60W, the manual says to go as high as 70W for extreme conditions. Other then that I just try to not sit in traffic to long.
Synthetic Oil:
Since moving to Florida and warmer weather, I've learned the beneficial effects of synthetic oil on motor temperature -- particularly in the Summer heat.
Using a digital temp gauge on my previous bike, an '02 Road King, I found that running synthetic oil dropped my engine oil temp (measured at the tank reservoir) about 25 degrees.
I've continued to use various full-synthetic oils (Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc.) with great success.
My last three Harleys have been EFI -- I believe these bikes have some heat management capability, particulary at idle.
Yes I just went to synthetic in the trans for the 65, HUGE differenceOriginally Posted by Lstpan

I leave the timing alone but I do fatten the carb up a bit. As I have said before, I run my own blend in the oil bag and have never seen over 200F on the hottest day here without an oil cooler. I also put it in Baddfatt's 116" TC and he never got over 223F riding two up @ 75+ back and forth to the R.O.T. You can rest assured he had a few spurts of way more than 75mph during that trip.He did say he got as high as 230 in stop and go traffic.

On the TC, I'd say keep your idle speed within spec. The oil is used to cool the pistons with some sort of spray on the backside, and running low idle will actually decrease oil pressure. That, and "blipping" the throttle will actually make it hotter and hotter.
Lots of guys run oil coolers but they really don't do a whole lot in stopped traffic, but what they do well is add an extra 1/2 - 1qt of oil which will ultimately lower the oil temp.
Keep an eye on your tires - dry rot and low pressure as heat and low pressure can lead to blowouts on old tires.
Old lead-acid batteries that are weak or in poor maintenance die remarkably easily in extreme heat. Keep that (distilled) water up to the level mark, and test for acid concentration and charge once in awhile.
Last, make sure you have good intake gaskets, a good clean air filter, correct timing - bike in general good maintained condition. Extremes have a tendency to expose weak links. As others said, synthetic oil (preferrably clean) has remarkable abilities to protect in extreme heat.
These tips on keeping the bike tiptop in the heat is great, but any advice for the riders? Ill be taking my BRC in July, fully geared up, with not a tree in sight. I anticipate the temps to be around 95-100 during that time.
What are some good tips for staying cool in the heat?
