Research your riding habits well before letting someone else talk you into cams.
Riding habits are generally let bike warm up till the top rocker of the back head feels warm.
Then I hit the road and thrash the balls of the bike, Roads are generally mountian ranges and senic ocean view roads.
Iam very hard on the bike, But its a Harley. Arnt these things built to be ridden as though its stolen?

yea, neither did I until My cars v6 shit itself.
Under a seco9nd opinion we came to the conclusion that putting in my case Mobil 1 in to a engine that was worn and had carbon build up in the engine case.
The oil caused the carbon to start breaking up and in turn seized my crankshft main bearings.

Discussions via Mobil, told me that in my case putting Syth oil in an engine with built up carbon, had infact caused the engine to fail prematurly.

    Cost for engine- $5000 +

I've heard that before, but that can happen to any old engine if you start changing the oil more frequently and/or start to run it harder. If I'm not mistaken, its the oil's detergent that loosens up deposits, and to my knowledge the syn doesn't have (significantly) more or less detergent additive than dino. JMHO

Yes, i think primarily the detergents are the main concern.
I guess looking at what you just wrote, THat makes alot of sense.
harley oils are genrally Diesel rated oil arnt they?
in which case making the oil too slippery which is how the bearings become glazed, wouldnt be that much of an issue on the motor.

Where as with the car, if you added Diesel oil to a worn engine, it probably wouldnt last long. As the car engine oil isnt Diesel rated and doesnt contain as much Detergents.

Same problem. I have a similar setup. I've rebuilt the entire cam chest with all new parts, includigng a new Feuling oil presser reliefe valve spring, only to have the same issue reoccur. Front exhaust valve side on mine, only after the bike is warmed up. Sounds like someone banging on the head with a ball peen hammer.

A local builder/racer recently told me he's seen this a lot. In his experience, the issues are not in the lower end (cam case) but in clearances having to do with the front rocker shaft and alignment bolts, or rocker end play, or rocker clearance with the rocker box, or improperly torqued top end bolts, or a combination of any or all the above.

I am reluctantly going to rebuild the front head. Look for wear or signs of hitting or rubbing on all the parts. If this does not work, then screw the TC, it's been plagued with problems since I bought it in 99. I'm so pissed at this thing I may not buy a new HD ever again.

I fixed the issue in my bike (TC-95). Quiet as a mouse now, all 100+ HP or it! Not even a little bit if ticking. Check the following post. It may, or may not be an issue with your bike as well. Additionally, check pushrod clearance where the poke through the heads and support plates. Hope it helps.
