Exhaust Upgrade options for my 2006 Night Train

Dealer told me that new laws won't allow him to install Screamin' Eagle exhausts for me. There are some exhausts that he can do, but they all sound to run upwards of $1k installed, adjusted, and tested. Any suggestions to improve the sound of my '06 FXSTBI?

Cheapest thing to do would be to buy some slip-on exhausts and change em out yourself if you can turn a wrench. Lots of em turn up on e-bay if you will watch. It will give you more of a rumble and won't hurt your engine as long as you don't mess with the air intake.

The 06's have a cat converter in the front pipe or you could just take out the baffles. If you could find a set of older stock slip ons you could go that route.

Congrats on the new bike and welcome to the forums!

Welcome to HCG, we put S&S slip-ons on Squirrel's Softtail standard and it sounds good. Not to loud, but a real deep Harley sound..

Thanks for the info I'll start looking today. Turning a wrench isn't a problem, but sounded like any exhaust change would require other upgrades and dyna testing. Thanks again.

S&S makes a kit (sold everywhere, try J&P Cycles -- jpcycles.com) that includes the slip-ons Squirrel has plus a high-flow air filter kit which they claim doesn't require remapping the ECM. I'm a bit skeptical of that myself, but you could look into it.

These thunderheaders are in Austin for $150.
If I hadn't just put on V&H 2 into 1, I would get them myself.

Cross check online to see if they fit your '06 softail.

Plus $500 for the PC III, re-map & installation. Not to mention the potential for fuck-up those things seem to be famous for. OK, so I'm a little biased against PC III. :P

    Come on OBG,

Don't scare the new guy away.

Besides in a perfect world (my perfect world that is)
there'd be no EFI, only better pans & knucks.

Besides if he gets better pipes he's going to want a cam next then a 95 kit
and it's only a matter of time until a PCIII or SERT is on the table.

Don't wanna scare him away, but he expressed some coin limitation in his original post and I'm pretty sure the thousand-buck options the stealer was quoting him included PC III and remapping, possibly a dyno run. I thought the point was to keep expense to a minimum. I have the same engine and I know if you change so much as the baffles it'll run lean enough to bleach the plugs.

Re: Exhaust Upgrade options for my 2006 Night Train

I was wondering where this post went. Couldn't find it.

Anyway, are you fuel injected? If you are fuel injected I would recommend the PCIII. I'm on my second without any issue what so ever. I'm a carb kind of guy, but over the past few months, I've really gotten the hang of the PCIII. You can make adjustments to it on the road without dropping a float bowl and getting gas everywhere.

I bougt mine on eBay for about $270 (incl shipping). It was a buy it now price.

I'd buy this and put it on a stock machine. To me stock machines run too lean anyway. Don't be afraid of it, it's not that hard at all. Dyno tune is only required for fine tuning. Many of the maps will get you in the ballpark which is about 80% there.

Buy this first. Then you can buy what ever pipes you want and install them yourself.

On my '04 Night Train, I put on V&H Big Shots. I love the sound and I love the performance. They have a hidden crossover. It really made that 88B come alive. I think I paid about $600 for them. They were a snap to install. A little tricky getitng around the coolin fins, but other than that, a real breeze.

Of course, you can buy that pipe online for a lot less. My dumb move.

I bought everything online for my last bike, the Ultra, and I don't regret it at all. You can even talk to Kagan here on the site if you are a supporting member.

But I'll tell ya, go to some rallies, visit biker bars, visit show. Go see and hear different bikes and pick out the ones for you.
