    Painting a fiberglass trunk

Ok, I scored a nice rear trunk that I'll use when I'm long-haulin and want to paint it black and have questions. I've seen lots of painted fiberglass bags and most don't look very good after a while, what's the best way? If I have a pro do it what will it cost? Can a rattlecan produce a decent finish? If so how do I prep the trunk before I paint? Then do I clearcoat it?

lenny , you should get a hold of spider with all these question , but to tell the truth if your only going to run it on trips then rattle can can be ok , you need to wet sand the whole thing then use some primer and wet sand again then rattle can with a few coats , no need to clear coat most of that is in the rattle can so to speak , if you want the job done correct with paint and clear coat then expect to pay at least 100.00 if your lucky to catch someone shooting black allready

Thanks Rex, I'll contact Spider for more info. This trunk will work really, really well with that quick release rack you sold me.
Hope for the best, but pack for the worst!

Well old evo the best way to prep these is a good 400 wet sand, no mind you once you do this you can no longer handle this with bare hands because of the oils. Sealer, Base coat and you deffinitly have to clear caot the project. Then it all has to be wet sanded out and buffed to achive that glossy look. Just to do a tour pac will run you around @250 to $300.00

Well I finally got this rear trunk project finished today. I can't be it took me 15 months to get it done but that's life. I decided on chap leather to match more with my bike and I really like how it turned out. Can't wait to use it for long hauling.

Rex, I really love that quick release luggage rack you sold me it works great.

15 months paid off. You did a great job making it unique and ordinary at the same time. Like it belongs there when it doesn't, ya know? Of course you know, you dreamt the fuckin' thing up!

    Re: Painting a fiberglass trunk

Thanks all for the kind words. It's fun designing and building these kind of parts for my bike. I loved walking out of the dealership after I bought the quick release brackets and they had told me I couldn't mount them on my bike.
I have always liked these earlier trunks they seem to be just the right size and shape and now with the leather it goes great with this bike and should fit any future bike I get or at least that's what I told my wife.
