the problem is that they ratchet up but not back. the m6 is the way to go for an auto adjuster...

I was thinking the other day about that auto tentioner. Could it be the cause of so many of the inner primary bearing bush to go south?Originally Posted by junior

good thought....
i haven't seen the new bearing yet. the old two peice setup was sloppy enough that some radial loading wouldn't do much. i believe the new bearing is a one piece- kinda like the sealed primo=style bearing used in belt drive applications. this might not be as forgiving.
all i know was tat in my case the chain was way too tight....

If the main bearing is whinnying thats not a good thing at all, I'm sure this has to have some effect on the bearing load, imagine the harmonic wobble it's causing else ware in the case. You guys could be on the something.
Like I said before I like my Haydens for now![]()

I was considering a Haydens the other day, but, I decided the old tried and true method is just as good. (and less expensive) I have to check it anyway with primary oil change.![]()

Well I just got my bike back from the shop and here is what caused all the trouble from the Missouri Run. Anybody wanta buy a slightly used gear pinion and clutch basket. My troubles all started in Feb with my starter clutch going out, they tore into it, inspected the starter, and replaced the clutch, so I head down to Missouri, and then more trouble. We all now think that the gear pinion got fatigued back in Feb but it was nothing that could be seen and not replaced, so the bottom line is on an older bike if you are tearing into it replace anything and everything that is questionable. That 50 dollar part cost me meeting new friends, some vacation time, 2 weeks of no riding, and a hefty repair bill.
I quess we all live and learn.
ouch!!!! that left a mark....

Ok, now I'm getting PISSED.
1500 miles after this new gear pinion and clutch basket were installed and now a very loud KLUNK today when starting the bike. I was not far from home so I headed there and tried it again in the garage. Again a very loud klunk/gringing sound almost as if one or two teeth have been sheared off again.
I think we have been fixing the symptom and not the problem. Anybody have any idea what possibly could be putting that much pressure on the gear pinion that it would shear off teeth every 1500 miles?
So tomorrow it's back to the shop, damn.
lenny-
did you look at the pilot bushing in the outer primary where the snout of the pinion rides? if it is egged out, the pinion can wobble during engagement...

It's been over a year since anyone has posted to this thread and I was wondering if the problem was resolved successfully. The reason I ask is that I'm experiencing the same problem. I changed up to a 95" kit with Bad Boyz heads, HQ cams and S&S gear drive. After 2500 miles, the starter went out. replaced it with a 1.4KW Allballz. 2 weeks and 500 miles later, I'm getting ready to leave for Sturgis (Friday Morn) and the pinion gear looses 3 teeth and scores all the teeth on the clutch basket. I'm installing an after market ring and pinion set, which is supposed to be stronger than the HD gears but half the price.
If there is something else I should look for, please let me know. Thanks, as always, this is the only site for the true skinny!
