To bring you up to speed, last year I had the top end done, pistons/rings .005 over, heads shaved .050, andrews EV-27cam, mikuni 42 carb, dyna 2000i ignition module. Seems like I have had detonation issues since day one. Took it back to the shop that did the work (5th time back) and now he's says that both head gaskets were bad. He didn't cover it under warranty as I had 10k miles since he did the work. My question is, what would cause this? I use this bike for commuting, 120 miles/day, not hotrodding (although I do get on it once and awhile). He's telling me that the detonation may have caused it and if that is true what is causing the detonation???? (He claims to have never experienced the detonation). I just want this issue resolved as it gets worse as the weather gets warmer. Thanks. JR

Take a look at a few of the posts in the forum on head gaskets, I believe Bog Boyz forum has some of the things that cause head gaskets to blow.
From my expierence most failures are from bad machining or improper installation. If both gaskets are shot then I'm leaning towards bad machining. I really would have to see & measure the parts to be 100% sure of the cause.
That really sucks at suck low milage

I'm with Wide, sounds as if the heads were not properly shaved.![]()

Thanks for the replies, guys. I really appreciate it. Next question, can you "hear" a bad head gasket? If so, what does it sound like? Also what are the indications of a bad head gasket? Thanks. I'm going to do a search for the big boyz thread. JR

It can sound like an exhaust leak (slight to loud ticking noise). Check around the base of the head where it meets the cylinder for any signs of black soot or even a white ash.![]()

Well that's exactly the sound I hear. I've heard it since I bought this bike and even right after the rebuild and the head gasket replacement. I asked the mechanic after the rebuild and he adjusted the valves a bit which didn't help. So I've been assuming that this was a "normal" sound. I guess I need to hook up with a more experienced guy (wide??) that's pretty local to me and get his opinion. Thanks.Originally Posted by Relic

if it has done this before AND after machine work then you might have a larger issue. first look for pipe seal/alignment issues, but if ok i am afraid that you might be chasing a cracked casting...
eliminate the simple stuff first...
