Is it worth it? And if it is worth it, which way should I go
screaming eagle with a cost of about $553
or
V-twin with a cost of about $422.
This is a 98 sportster and I usually just use the bike to go back and forth to work. About 400 miles per week.
I dont have much expierence with thsi but a few of our members did it
I'll move this to the Sporster forums so you get more attention
I know it runs like a raped ape if you do the cam & a little headwork to it
Would I do it, Yep![]()

Whichever you decide, be sure you get the correct pistons to use with the 883 heads without head modification.
Neither way should require head work. They say either way is simple bolt on. How simple, we shall see
you will see a big improvement 0 to about 70 or so, if it's done right you should be faster to 70 than a stock 1200.
If you don't do the head work, it won't run on anything but racing fuel. The combustion chamber on the 883 is egg shaped . When you put 1200 pistons in the chamber will be too small. I had someone do my heads. I cc'ed them to 9.6:1 . I have to run on 93 octane or better.Originally Posted by redeye

I thought this is why the new pistons were reverse domed.
Redeye you are correct, dished pistons for stock heads.
I recently did all that.....be warned its very addicting.Just pistons and jugs ups the hp alot. But you will still be leaving some horse's on the table. As money allows stage 1 or 2 head work and since the heads are breathing better some cams help alot.ok so now ya need a ing. mod.I put in a dyna 2000i. with a accel singlefire coil. Then you will want a good exhust(thunderheader)
Do you have to have all that?Nope but the other stuff makes everything elese work better.
attached is a graph that shows stock, then each mod.,etc..
If I had to buy a new sportster all over again I would probably buy an 883 and do the conversion instead of buying a 1200 at first. Cheaper bike price, cheaper insurance and if it's true what they say, the 1200 conversion is quicker than a 1200 stage 1 stocker?

Ok, so far you all say I should do it, but nobody has said yet if I should go with the v-twin or the screaming eagle
