Mine were too. Don't pry or hammer on the fins, they'll just break. Try this instead. On the cam side of the shovelhead, the front cylinder front base stud (and the rear cylinder rear base stud) line up with the cylinder head boss above it. Slip a 3" bolt/nut combo in there upside down: we'll call that bolt the "press." Remove all the base nuts (you can leave the one under the "press" for better bearing, but raise it off the cylinder), then put a wrench on the "press" bolt head to keep it from turning, turn the "press" nut up against the head boss and press the cylinder off the case. Worked like a charm for me with very little effort and no stress to the cooling fins.
Something similar would also work for a stuck head. Remove all the other head bolts but just loosen the head bolt above that same base stud about 1/4". Put a shorter "press" bolt in there and push up between the base stud and the head bolt. It'll pop right off.
