How do you adjust the tension on bikes with a belt drive?
My experience at all the stealerships, has been that they over tighten the damn thing every time. When I leave the stealership, it seems fine for the first few miles until it gets warmed up. And then it begins to sing and whine like Jeff Gordon after a losing a race.
I've also noticed that on my Sportster, I can adjust the belt so it will deflect about 2 inches. Then rotate the tire, and it tightens up in certain spots. I also notice a slight twist in the belt, when eying up from the rear. Anyone have this problem?
Your bike needs to be cold, as expanded, warm pulleys all come into play after the adjustment.
The belt adjustment is done with a special tension tool, and is based on your make/model of bike. On my 1995 Dyna, they ask for 5/16"-3/8" of up and down play, with 10lbs of pressure applied to the lower part of the belt ($22 guage from HD does that for you) and WITH a rider sitting on the bike. Different bikes with different width belts all vary, including with/without a rider on it during the procedure.
A Harley Service manual is your best friend and a well spent investment.
