    Need a quieter exhaust

Not on my RK but on my Honda XR100 get the mail bike.

It is a 2000 which I bought used and road raced (old guys race them on go-kart tracks for beer mugs). I modified the exhaust can by ripping out some of the guts and shortened it by two inches. More power, but it screams.

Now I use it to ride a mile down the road and back to get my mail. Really annoying sound.

How can I make it quieter?

Would wrapping the headers help? I don't think it would but that would be cheap.

Thought of plasma cutting the can and trying to pack it with something. Maybe Roxul insulation or steel wool or something?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated by my neighbours.

    cheers

Fill the muffler can with steel wool.

    Re: Need a quieter exhaust

    Well that didn't work...

Stuffed the exhaust full of steel wool. Quieted the bike up nicely. Also installed the stock air box (was an open K+N).

Well I came back from the mail box with the bike pinned. Sparks flying out the exhaust. All the steel wool melted.

    So now what?

Was thinking Roxul insulation (mineral fibre that won't burn)?

    Any other bright non-flammable ideas?

    Re: Need a quieter exhaust

2 cycle shops have a packing for their mufflers... Pull the inner baffle, wrap it with the packing, tie it on tight with mechanics wire, re-install it and "Presto" it will be allot quieter....

    Re: Need a quieter exhaust

    Thanks.

    New muffler is $150.
Have seen a few on ebay but mostly rusty pieces of crap.

Will look into this muffler packing stuff.

Butterfly valve is interesting but not sure how much it would quieten things.
