    81 Sportster Milwaukee Special

    I own an '81 Sportster 1000 XLH. I was told when I acquired it 10 years ago it was a limited edition "Milwaukee Special". However, I have not been able to confirm there ever was such a beast. It is the orange and black Harley colors with "Milwaukee" on the front fork bar. Does anyone have any information on it?

    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forums Sheriff

    Back in 81 there were quite a few strange items going around in the HD world

    I'll look into this but a picture would be great

    This is all I could find.

    1981:
    * Buy back from AMF
    * wire or cast wheels options, 16" or 18" rear wheel options
    * XLS
    o buckhorn handlebars
    o shorty dual exhaust
    o 3.3 gallon, 2.2 gallon tank optional.
    * XLH
    o shorter front forks
    o 3.3 gallon optional.
    * Production Information:
    o XLH (8,442)
    o XLS (1,660)
    Rules? We don't need no stinking Rules!

    I don't recall that name. Might have just been a special paint combo.

    The one special edition I do recall that really got attention was a blacked out iron-head that came with a dual carb setup. I think it was only produced for one year and was hard to find.

    Back in 1980 I got a 1980 XLH 1000 that the original owner couldn't pay off. Harley made those large engines in Sportsters so we could fight with them Shovel Head riders who allways talked bad about our rides.

    With just a stock four speed transmission it really helped to pack some chick and camping gear up any hill with that 1000 engine I couldn't help cracking up when I saw some of them stock small engine rides.

    At ocean level I could even use wider than stock straight pipes so the motor would sound more like a Shovel Head. It helped to be at that low altitude and had to be changed when I got back on the main land.

    I remember them, they were pretty retro looking

    Would you want to sell it?

    I own one. Bought it in 2011. Ride it on a regular basis. Showing it Sunday at the AMCA show in Phoenix. I have a letter from Harley Davidson that describes the details of the model and states that 500 were made.
