How much of your life do you spend living in the present?
Research shows that it's very little. We spend a lot of time ruminating about the past, or speculating about the future. To make things worse, much of this "non-present" thinking is negative. We think about the things we might have done, or we think about future dramas that may, in reality, never occur. Or we might just simply wish it was Friday, and effectively wish a significant portion of our lives away.
The secret to real peace and happiness is to live in the present - to focus on the "Now."
If you catch yourself living in another time zone remember, the present is where fulfillment is.

It's amazing what you learn when life throws a pile of shit on you. You finally realize that this life you live is a gift that can be revoked at any time. The little things don't bother you anymore and the big things don't seem so bad.

it's true but hard to do. that's why i like riding. i find it forces me to stay in the present. for safety reasons obviously, but more importantly to feel the breeze, the heat, the cold. to smell the trees and other good smells as well as not so nice. to see things more clearly and notice and appreciate the beauty. to hear rk sing it's baritone and battle for volume with the wind. to taste a good bug. don't know why but i really can't recall riding and worrying about the work ahead or how i or someone else screwed up yesterday.
regarding the bike, the only time i really live in the past is when i'm going to sleep the night after a ride and i'm replaying the day's miles in my mind.

If I had known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself!
I spend as much time in the present as I can. My Dad worked 6-7 days a week, 12-16 hours a day for three or four years of his life, as the company he worked with put more and more on him as they eliminated other positions. His health suffered for it, but he kept saying that he "only" had a few years to go before he could take early retirement and enjoy his life. The last time I saw him, I begged him to quit, but he felt he had too much invested in the company he worked for. Less than a month afterward, he had a fatal heart attack - gone at 48 years young.
I had many of his 'workaholic' qualities, and have worked very hard to know when it's time to work hard, but equally important to take the time to play and enjoy life. Riding our motorcycles, ATV's, and travelling are things that we try to do as often as we can. Spending quality time with family and friends is a priority in our lives. And somehow, we manage to get the work done. It seems to go more smoothly the less we "worry" about it.
No problem for me. I'm a laid-back, take-it-easy kinda guy. Well, that's how I describe it. My wife calls me a lazy sumbitch. I'll never work myself to death, you can be sure of that. Nobody outside my family gives a fuck about me -- why should I give a fuck about them, much less work myself to death for their sorry asses?
I love mankind; it's people I can't stand.
