    adding electrical accessories

well have you ever wondered how many accessories you add to your bike's charging system without drawing the battery down? here are a few of the common add on to help you determine what you can do, although I want you to remember , different years bikes have different charging systems, and LED lights draw less then other lights

    cigarette lighter_____________________6.00 amps

    twin horns__________________________7.00 amps

    passing lamps_______________________ 4.70 amps

    decorative taillight___________________ 3.60 amps

    light bar____________________________1.10 amps

front fender light ____________________ .80 amps

    fuel gauge__________________________ .15 amps

    oil pressure gauge____________________ .15 amps

    cylinder temp_______________________ .15 amps

    clock_______________________________ .15 amps

    am/fm radio with cassette ______________ 1.75 amps

radio stand by mode "memory"___________.10 amps

    am/fm/cb_____________________________2.50 amps

Now to give you a example on a 1980 flh the charging system at 3600 rpm will put out 17.8 amps harley recommends that you use no more then 15 amps don't forget you still have to account for ignition and head light, as well as tail light and turn signals also on some running lights many of the new bikes have 22 amp systems or even 32 amps systems , but this is meant to be a guide, and don't forget that heated gearing draws a lot of amps but check the labels for the amount, by adding all the items on your bike you can see what kind of strain you are putting on your bikes charging system, also a good draw test on your battery at the start of each rideing system is recommended..

    Re: adding electrical accessories

The newer bikes with the three phase system provide 25A at idle and 40A continuously above 2800 rpm. I think (???) they started them in 06 and up. I use an Odyssey battery that helps with the draw too as it does not go down as quick as a standard battery.

Some batteries provide enormous cranking power. Others, deep cycle reserve power. The revolutionary ODYSSEY™ battery is designed to do both.

How is this possible? The answer begins with flat plates made of 99.99% pure virgin lead - not lead alloy. Pure lead plates can be made thinner, so we can fit more of them in the battery. More ODYSSEY battery plates mean more plate surface area. And that means more power - twice as much as conventional batteries.

In fact, ODYSSEY batteries are capable of providing engine cranking pulses in excess of 2250 amps for 5 seconds - double to triple that of conventional batteries, even at very low temperatures. And they can handle 400 charge-discharge cycles to 80% depth of discharge.
