I have a 95' Softail Custom 80 inch with a Mikuni 42mm carb. After a lot of chasing a leak (I thought I had an oil leak), however that is not the case. I have determined there is too much fuel that is coming off the throttle slide plate from the nozzle of the accelerator pump. So much that it leaks out of the air filter. It is particularly noticable by repeated accelerating of the throttle. What do you think... Is there a remedy..

if the bike is just sitting and you pump the throttle it will puke gas
if you are running fine and you stop and the bike pukes gas it might be the float is adjusted wrong or there is crap stuck in the float valve

mine did the same thing last week.
after sitting all winter it sucked some crap under the seat of the float valve and it was over filling the bowl, allowing gas to run down the throat of the carb.
pulled the carb and tore it down and gave it a good cleaning, now everything is fine

good suggestions, but you might also want to adjust your accelerator pump
Bucket list are for Sissie, men do it while they can enjoy it
Thank you for your suggestions. I did remove and inspect the float bowl needle, main jet and accelerator nozzle. All were quite clean. I'm thinkin' I will try a smaller size accelerator nozzle.

Now can any of you help with my battery size question I posted under Softails?
a 42 mm carb is too big for an 80 incher unless you have a really long intake and are running 8,000 rpms
I let my mind wander.......It never came back
Why? There are many varieties and combinations of carburetion and fuel injection.Originally Posted by Heretic
intake velocity.
stock 80 inch models had a 40mm keihin. increasing the carb bore on any engine decreases the air speed for the same engine through the venturi. lower air speeds mean less fuel atomization which can be read as over fueling.

as always, Junior is 100% correct....
The S&S shorty E worked very well on an 80 inch evo, and was only 38MM. Edelbrock recommended their 38mm on everything up to 96 cubic inches..I run a 46mm carb on my 127 inch stroker........somethimes less really is more![]()
