00 RKC. Garmin nuvi 260W. Ram mount. I want to hard wire the power cord to the bike. Garmin tells me they only sell the cigarette lighter power cord. Question- Can I cut the lighter attachment off. put in an in-line fuse and hard wire it. I want to do the wirering inside the headlight area. I was told that if I cut the lighter attachment off, I would lose volts???????

Yes you can cut it off and hard wire it. Whomever told you that had to be pulling your leg. I know Harley makes an attachment that will go under the seat that provides and auxillary outlet. I know you could wire it under the seat. I haven't wired anything in the headlight area so I don't know. any place you can find room. When I have had the same issues I just taped the cigarette lighter type plug together with whatever I needed to power. Then if I need to pull it off I still have my cigarette lighter type female ready for the next toy and don't have to hard wire it in and cut it back out.

On my FLHR, there is a 12V unused plug under the headlight nacelle (some sort of HDI lighting option maybe?) that I connected my GPS mount power supply to. Soldered and shrinkwrapped with an inline fuse on the + line. Easiest way I could find to do it.
do not know about your unit , but on mine the cigarette plug on it,' the unit' is also a power reducer, from 12 volt to 3.2 volts for the unit, so better check that first before you snip ! I mounted mine like George did , just a differ location

Good point. Fortunately mine is 12V, at least I must have made that determination prior to installaing it (and it's been working fine since installation). I should probably confirm that though LOL.
Thanks. I think that's what the guy was telling me. The lighter unit drops the volts from 12 to 5.Originally Posted by wreckerman
Next Question- I have the trickle charge attachment on the battery. Do they make the cigarette lighter female end to plug into that?

Nope, mine is 5V. I have the HD RoadQuest mounting/wiring kit (for a "regular" Garmin Quest) that somehow converts the voltage. Good thing I didn't modify the wiring harness, only hooked into the existing 12V source instead of the battery terminals and coiled up the extra wire inside the nacelle. It's been so long since I've installed this I can't remember LOL.Originally Posted by JD
trying to pick up the correct connection for a battery tender can be tough you can try to contact the company for replacement parts , but in most case's going out and buying a new unit is your best bet can be had for under 20 if you shop a little, but there is no reason if you watch what your doing why you cant wire in a hole connection kit for it , go to your auto parts store and see what kind of 2 lead connection plugs they have then splice it in

Reduces it from 12 V to 5 V yet all the 12V electronics work?? WTF?? There is something I don't understand. Does anyone have that wiring diagram? Something doesn't sound quite right to me, but there are explanations for everything. Just being in electronics for the past 32 years something isn't making sense here.

george they are doing a piggy back to the battery with a 12 volt inverter , so that lets the rest of the system run on the 12 volt, it needs... but reduce the 12 volt lead that they grab with the inverter and takes it down to the 5 volts they need for the gps , the lead would then be useless for any other power to any other idem
