This mod to my bike saved my bacon this weekend. On Saturday I found myself about 9 hours away from home up in Copper Harbor Michigan over the holiday weekend. I was having a great time when my bike just wouldn't start. I was able to jump start it and head on down the road. I rode with the headlights off (see link to mod.) and the battery charged up enuff that I could start the bike for the rest of the trip. I know it's a weak battery cause for a awhile I road with my headlights on and then at a gas station it wouldn't turn over so I had to get a jump.
Without this mod I really don't know if I could have gotten home. I didn't see any auto parts places open at all to find a new battery.

So if any of you have this older style switch I highly recommend this simple 1/2 hr project. It could save your bacon along ways from home.
Hope for the best, but pack for the worst!

Update on my electrical troubles. I needed to figure out if it was a battery, stator, or regulator issue. First thing I did was go to the stator/regulator connector with my tester to see the voltage from the stator. Well it just fell off and was full of road grime. So I cleaned up both sides of the plug, snapped it back on and went for a long ride. (I did test the stator output first and it was fine.) Voltage now at the battery is 12.9 volts.
So what I'm trying to share here is check that plug and contacts every now and then and make sure you have a good, clean, solid connection.

Well my stator finally crapped out on me up in the UP of Michigan while on the road to the End O Summer party. But the ability to ride with no headlights and a trickle charger kept me on the road till we made it to Iron Mountain, MI. There we came across an Indy shop named Shiny Side Up. http://www.shinysideupinc.com/index.html
He had bikes stacked up like cord wood but made time for me. Then he had the part in stock, and replaced the stator in less that 2 hours. I really can't thank him enough for taking the time to get me back on the road. If your ever up in that neck of the woods stop in, they have a great shop.
