Gents,
Talking homemade straight pipes for Evo 80",
this is a dumb question, but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the part on the header/pipe that the flange presses against. The rounded steel doughnut/cup that fits into the block.
I can flare the pipes myself, but the rounded, welded-on (insert name here) will give a better seal, I can tell.
You talking about these? Exhaust Flange
No, about the part that these are tightened agaiiiinst to hold the pipes on. Would also like some tips on flaring techniques, I have some redneck ideas, but am open to input
never actually called it anything-, although spigot end would seem appropriate.
depends on what size/diameter flare. for lengthy flares of large diameter you might try making a cone out of light gauge and then after tacking use a chop or band saw to cut true ends. small flare can be made with heat and old bearing cones from a brake lathe or anything that would give the shape.
kind of a general question, but i do everything the "redneck" way....

You can do a flare the old fashioned way, stick he pipe in a drill press spin it and use a piece of hardwood to flare the end out. They call this "metal spinning" we have a few shops down here that still do it with tools 100+ years old. Very cool thing. Mooneyes is well know for using this method
EDIT
Just found this clip on it, you can use the technique to make a flare

Flare -that was the part I was thinking of, but I know some builder's use a weld-on unit, not really a flare. I think I'll do it up with a pipe shaper and call that good enough. Thanks for the replies.
Have you considered cutting of the flare/flange from an old set of stock hearers and welding it into a slightly larger od exhaust pipe?
