    Battery Charging

    I have a 95' Softail Custom

Recently the battey went dead while out for a ride.
A couple of weeks prior, I replaced the rotor and stator and the battery is 3 months old. I recharged the battery via battery tender Jr. and I have not had a problem since.
I stopped by an independent motorcycle repair shop and addressed the problem.
The mechanic inquired as to what battery did I replace with. I purchased an AGM battery from the Harley dealer. While he is not making a diaogsis without seeing the bike ... he did go on to say the AGM battery works like a memory type of battery. Conventional rechargers do not recharge AGM batteries correctly. True? or Smoke..

I let my mind wander.......It never came back

100% bullshit. The guy is out of his mind. Must be one of those guys who says "Beer doesn't get me drunk. I can drink 20 and still be fine." Pass a breathalyzer asshole.

    Re: Battery Charging

They used to say that about rechargable batteries for cell phones and laptops. Never heard of vehicle batteries having memory.
I don't think they even make rechargable ones like that anymore.

    Re: Battery Charging

Further to my point... Every time you get on your bike each ride is a different duration of time and at different variations of high speeds and stop-and-go. Is he trying to say that riding your bike differently is ruining the memory?

Bike batteries only charge when surplus voltage is available. Who the hell can say at what point while riding that surplus is available.

    Myth BUSTED.

    Re: Battery Charging

    Voltage in = charge

variables = charge length = temperature = immediate chemistry, amp hour charge rate.

I know multi level charging is excellent we have a 10,000 440 volt charger that uses this technology for our lift truck with 24 batteries

    Re: Battery Charging

Ajax, after rereading your original post now I feel confused. I'm saying that a Battery Tender Jr. is an excellent choice for a charger. Are you saying that you used a conventional and had a problem and that after switching to a Jr. it was fine again? If you were using a conventional then yes, it has a negative effect. It has nothing to do with the battery's "memory" but with the physics of amp/hr charge rate. Sheesh. I jumped all over this post and now I'm not sure that I was backing the right horse.

Fact: Variable Rate Chargers (Battery Tender Series) are good.

Fact: Constant Rate Chargers over 10% of your battery's Amp/Hr Rating are BAD. Assume 2.5 A/H MAXIMUM for an AGM battery and make sure it says "Floating Charge Rate".

Example: Battery Tenders charge at 1.25 A/H. BT Juniors are .75 A/H. Some auto chargers are as high as 5 A/H. Death to your battery.

    Re: Battery Charging

I want to Thank all of you for your responses. It is full of insight to a rather mundane issue. The only battery charger I have is a battery tender jr. Obviously not a high output charger. Perhaps the best way to charge a battery (in my opinion). Kagan you are the best... do not leave any stone unturned..
What has boggled my mind is why the battery went dead while out for a ride. I don't get it....

    Cheers

Have you checked your charging system?
