Handbrake fix for Can Am Spyder

O.K. ladies and Germs. I know this is a Harley chatgroup and I will ALWAYS be a Harley guy at heart, but it looks like my best, most cost effective and safest bet for getting my flea bitten carcass back in the saddle is indeed the Can Am Sypder (at least it's built in North America). After totaling the potential cost of converting my '94 dresser into a trike, that option would still have a number of remaining workarounds that still need to be dealt with. The Spyder is not only reasonably priced and of a seamingly high degree of technological advances but comes stock with a clutchless electronic handlebar mounted shifter, a standard reverse gear and I've found at least three aftermarke fab shops that make wheelchair mounts.

The ONLY workaround that I have to deal with is the fact that all three wheels have computor controled ABS (a good thing) which has all three brakes being actuated by a single foot lever mounted at the right foot rest. I've tryed to figure hou to move this to a single hand control without any mods to the computor controlled fluid driven ABS system. I guy I met on a dissability web site steered me toward this YouTube video. He has a Spyder and this is how he solved the problem. Looks like I've run out of excuses not to get one.

The automatic trans version of the Spyder goes out the door at about 16.5K but I've located several of them on the web were the owners need to get out of them and even some dealers looking to clear inventory at a reduced price. Another atractive factor supporting the Spyder is that once I get on the road, I can sell my dresser to offset at least half of the cost of the Spyder. The thought of offing my original dresser brings tears to my eyes. But so does watching it collect dust in the back of the garage.

I guess a Spyder on the road beats a Harley collecting dust. Wow, never thought I'd hear myself spewing this kind of heracey.

Bear....let me know how that hand brake works

My dad had three back surgeries and his right leg goes numb and useless. We have a trike rear end, but he does not want to use it, for some reason........we were talking about can ams just last weekend

BTW...my wife grew up in Minn, racing the hot snow mobiles across the flats. She likes the can ams
I let my mind wander.......It never came back

Shit bear, nobody is going to blame you for going the safest most reliable route.
That idea sounds great to me.
Glad to hear you will stick around.

I almost cut my hair, it happened just the other day.
It was gettin' kinda long, I could've said it was in my way.
But I didn't and I wonder why, I feel like letting my freak flag fly

Bear, you renew my faith in humans -- where there is a will there is a way!

I wish you great success and many miles of smiles with your new ride. Everywhere you go, you will continue to inspire people.

    Best of luck!

Here is a nice review of the CAN-AM Spyder SE5. Very cool.

My cousin in Minnesota sells those things - they are AWESOME.
If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

MSRP for the 2009 SE5 is around 17k, but I'm starting to see some dealers posting end of the season pricing as low as 15,500. I figure I'll wait unitil at least mi-Sept. before I really start talking to dealers. I also found a few low milage units on the net offered by guys who got caught in the money crunch and are just trying to dump their toys.

I have been in communication with the guy in the video and he is now working on a handbrake that is actuated by a pnuematic slave cylinder. He hopes to have that project hammered out within the next month or so. I hope to be up and running by next spring.

You pervert George!! Kellies gonna give you one off the side of the head

After what you've been through Bear, I'm glad to see you just about got yourself talked into that Spyder. Price is right there for not many mods you have to make. Just look at the Harley three wheeler. $32,000. You can get yourself a ride for half that and auto on top it all. Was on a ride several years ago with a wheel chair rider on a three wheeler that carried his little terrier up front and din't seem to have any trouble at all. He was able to manuver with a cane though getting on and off.

MMMM.... couple of lesbiens... George, Ya got me thinkinn I take that back about Kellie.
I survived my youth. can I survive what's left?
