Hi there. My Glide just turned 20 years old and 60'000 miles. It has been mine from new so I know it pretty well. I started noticing a smell of fuel some time ago but couldn't find a leak. Petrol pipe was replace over the winter. Out playing yesterday and at about 90mph and on the over-run she just stopped running and was spluttering and would have stalled if I hadn't given her a fistfull of choke/enricher. With the choke fully extended I could get 2800 rpm max with minor adjustments at the throttle. I rode her home 110miles at 50mph with no problems. I didn't hear any pops or any unusual sounds when she failed. I am assuming a carb or electrics problem but I know sweet FA about either. Any help much appreciated.
I am sure you will get some better advice than mine, but..... I had a 1990 sportster that did the same thing. Look at the accelerator pump to see if there is a blockage. This goes from the nozzle in the intake all the way down to the float bowl. Once I soaked the carb (minus any seals and non metalic parts) in Berryman's parts solvent for about an hour I didnt have the problem anymore.

Welcome to HCG. Checked out WalkSpain sounds like great fun.
Your bike issue sounds like a fuel / carb problem. With 60,000 miles if you have never had the carb rebuilt I would suggest doing so, along with new intake gaskets.
You could take the poor mans way first and try something like SeaFoam. It's an additive you add to you fuel (1 oz per gal) and it does a excellent job in cleaning a carb (lots of other brands out there)
but it's only a cleaned.

As for the smell of fuel you mentioned, your carb has an overflow tube
and it's not uncommon for a small amount of fuel leakage if you float sticks.
Good luck and let us know what you find.
would not hurt to put an inline fuel filter after the carb rebuild, I will be rebuilding my carb and adding a filter to my bike today
rebuild kit 29.00 US from JAMES and 8.00US for a fuel filter

Thanks to everybody who replied. Yesterday I took the carb and the seat off so I could get a better look at the fuel lines and vacumn pipes. I was lazy and just removed the rear screws before swinging the tank up. I blocked it in the raised position and saw that the "New" petrol pipe was leaking where it had fractured near the fuel tap. I cut it back to good pipe and clamped it again. I can't run inside so its a roadtest today. I discount no possibilities but it is definitely revving out a lot better so here's hoping. The carb rebuild and fuel filter is great advice which I will keep for the winter, if the bike lets me!
Glad you figured it out Rockape. I will be visiting Spain the last week in October.
We are staying in Madrid, Sle, and Gabraltar.
I almost cut my hair, it happened just the other day.
It was gettin' kinda long, I could've said it was in my way.
But I didn't and I wonder why, I feel like letting my freak flag fly
