I have a 1984 evo fxst. It has kick and electric start. It is a 4 speed shovel trans. I can kick it through once and then it locks up. When I hit the stater button it free's up. The motor turns over. I took the kicker cover off and everything looks fine. When I turn the mainshaft it locks up. Yes, it is in neutral. Have any of you shovelhead GURUS any idea what is wrong?![]()

Maybe it's me, but I'm not sure what you're trying to say. When you kick it, what locks up?
I know you see it clearly, cause it's right there. We ain't .
It could be as simple as a bad throwout bearing.
Do you mean the kick starter stays in the down position and doesn't come back up? You just gonna have to be a little more specific.
My Golf Swing is so bad, I look like a caveman killing his lunch.
It kicks through and comes back up but will not kick through again. If I hit the starter button and roll the motor over, then I can kick it through once again and then it jams or locks up and will not budge

Reminds me of the guy who went to the doctor and the doctor asked him what seemed to be the problem. The man rolled his arm into an abnormal position and said, "It hurts when I do this." The doctor replied, "Don't do that." Problem solved.

sounds like you need new bearings
I let my mind wander.......It never came back
That's such a common problem these days. People just need to sit back and examine their lives, take a deep look at where they're going and what they have planned for themselves.Originally Posted by Heretic
Sounds like his crankshaft might need new ones, too.

Check the position of the throw out bearing and the timimg of the kicker gears.
Did you change or do something in the kicker area?
Kinda late responding to this problem. It sounds like you may have a weak starter clutch spring. Not the kicker spring but the one behind the starter mainshaft gear. If the mainshaft gear bushing is worn it may allow the gear to cock and bind only releasing when the engine is spun by the e.starter.
I would suggest replacing the starter clutch, spring and bushing. should solve the problem. Make sure the gear teeth are not sharp or worn.
Hope this helps.

of course the other option is finding something I want to trade for the 6 speed I have under my work bench.![]()
