I recently placed an order for some stainless steel brake rotors and the gal taking the order informs me that there is a "tech note" with this part. The tech note says I cannot use stock pads with these rotors. I'm guessing the composition of the pads is incompatible with the SS. She didn't know. From what I have been able to tell, the pads need to be Sintered or Organic in composition.
Three questions:
1. Am I right in guessing that it is the composition of the pads that make the incompatable?
2. What are the stock Harley pads, metallic or what?
3. WTF difference does it make if I run the stock pads on the SS rotors?
I don't have any answers, but good to see you here.
Cheap stuff ain't good! Good stuff ain't cheap!
Thx George. Been busy as hell with no relief in sight.
I think it falls into the line of thinking:
You can put new pads on an old rotor, but you can't put old pads on a new rotor. New pads on an old rotor will quickly just wear into the new rotors grooves, whereas old pads with grooves will only use the flat part of the pads and therefore cause heating and fading because you're not using all the pad surface for friction.
One of the reasons I'm asking is because I have in my stash of parts at home, one brand new OEM set of pads for the rotors in question. New pads for new rotors, but the question still stands. If I can believe the sales gal and her "tech note", I cannot use these pads with the SS rotors.
stock pads are horrible
They will glaze over fast as heck and squeal like pigs, go with good ones

Get the Kevlar compound pads. They wear out a bit quicker but will stop like a mofo and won't score the rotor friction surface.
we put stainless rotors on my dad's chopper (I polished them). On the rear of my hot rod, I have a floating rotor. The center is billet, and the outer ring is polished SS.....I just got good pads, in both cases, and there have been no problems with either bike stopping
I let my mind wander.......It never came back
If you do some research you have to run a particular pad on SS rotors. I think they have to be semi metallic but better check. In my experience you just cannot beat a good cast rotor for every day riding.
Just a few more states and I will have them all on one motorcycle. If you see my bike on a trailer it is stolen call the police. http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r...s/mapsmall.jpg
I got some Lyndall kevlar pads on order. I've heard they are the way to go.
