I'm looking at a bike on ebay. It has a 2003 evo engine with S&S crank and crank cases. Is this likely to be a reliable engine? What are the major issues with the evo engine that I should be aware of?
Before modern times there was walking, but not the perfection of walking, because there was no tea.
2003 EVO???
Must not be a H-D Evo.
Ah. Its got a 1340cc engine. What would that make it? Twin cams started off at 1450cc didn't they?

I had over 175K on an old 95 inch evo engine. It was starting to smoke, but still ran well.....Originally Posted by Dr.Bob
The evo heads were more conducive to throttle response than the TC heads. I have never thought that TC heads breathe well. There is a lot of potential there, but it takes some work to get it out.
Now here is the downside. S&S still uses shovelhead style shafts for their big evo bottom ends. They are lighter, and therefore quicker than say Jim's bottom ends, but will not last as long if ridden hard......I was going to use an S&S 124 in my bike, until I did my research and found this out....I ended up going with the Jim's bottom end, in my own bike. I know a lot of people who swear by S&S though
Now with that in mind.....I think I would have bought that bike
I let my mind wander.......It never came back
I have a new S&S old evo style engine on my Big Dog. It's very reliable. The only issue I had with the bike was vapor lock. Got a vented gas cap and the problem was solved.
