as follow up to my earlier posts, after removing the heads I think I've found the source of the knocking noise from my engine. looks like the plate that holds the valve spring on the shaft is hitting the side of the rocker box pretty good. anyone have an idea what may cause this? the plate itself looks fine, but it may be harder metal (stainless?) than the brass that makes the rocker box. it looks like the pad on the rocker arm that pushes down the valve may be worn, but I've never seen one before so I don't know what its supposed to look like. thanks
forget some maybe important info. the pushrod comes off the top of the tappet a bit of an angle. the other 3 pushrods come straight off the lifters.

no replies after a week, first time that's happened. must be because everyone looked at this and said WTF? After taking that rocker box to a local shop, it seems that gouge was put there on purpose, to give the top of the valve spring some clearance. lots of work has been done to the valve seats, causing the spring collar to stick out farther than it should. have to keep looking for the source of the knocking noise. first time I've taken a Harley engine apart (or any engine, for that matter). I'm in way over my head, but having fun with this.
Ahh they put bigger ratio rockers or the fat ones
These are just glorified briggs and stratton motors, no biggy just use the basics and you will be fine
