anyone have any luck / info on the 5 to 6 spd conv. kit...or just bite it and get a complete 6 spd trans ? working with a 97 ultra custom softail 96" s&s.
thanks
there are a couple different ways to go....Which tranny are you looking at?
Some are not actually overdrive trannies. They have lower bottom gears, and you change out your front primary sprocket to change the primary ratio to the transmission
Just off the top of my head, I think the evo softail tranny is the least expensive to buy as a 6 speed.......I think I even have a polished one in the shop, right now

S&S six speed through a buddy , not sure of the gears / ratio as of yet on it or mine for that matter..going to be a winter project so it will be a week or two depending on sweet mother nature until I can dive into mine to see which avenue to travel...have any figures on the tranny you have or the gear cluster ? Where are you located ?
thanks
i don't think s&s even makes trannies anymore, but the one that they useta make is like heretic described- closer lower gears with a 1:1 final. what are you after? quicker acceleration or a lower cruising rpm? i just went cross country with a guy that had a OD 6th and he rarely used it except for when we were back east and they do like 90 everywhere...

I am in Northern CA.....you wouldn't be Johnny would you?...if it is, Bobby asked me to help him out at the Firehouse tonight (security for the party)....stop by
I know that everyone talks about lower cruising RPMs, but there is a drawback that never seems to get discussed. The standard harley engine only balances at about 60%...Now I am sure I would lose a lot of people here if I tried to explain this, because I am not so good at putting things like that into words....So let's skip that and just say that a harley engine runs smoothest at about 3,000 RPMs. The farther you get away from that number, the more felt vibration
Now if you can deal with that, lower RPMs do mean slower piston speed, and in some cases, less heat. if that is what you are looking for it will probably be cheaper to buy an overdrive tranny, then get one with a 1:1 top gear ratio and change the primary drive ratio, and the final drive ratio (unless your friend will cough one up cheap). just bolting an old model S&S transmission onto your bike will give you a lower hole gear, but nothing on the top end. For some reason, I doubt you need a lower bottom gear, with a 96 inch S&S engine...I am making an assumption that you have a custom rear sprocket, so replacing it with a smaller one, to raise the top end gear ratio may be an added price, that can be avoided

Nope not Johnny...smitty from Iowa...lower cruising rpms is what I am looking for, just going to waite and see what I find in mine when I get into it here in a week or two...maybe install a little tattle tail just to see what I am actually turning at 70 or 80 mph...will keep ya posted on thoughts and decisions.
Thanks for the input
