I would like to wrap the header pipes on my '09 Ultra. This would be from the heads to the beginning of the mufflers. Can anyone tell me if this is a good idea and/or if it will cause any problems with the exhaust? I would like to reduce the amount of heat coming off the pipes and stop the melting of my riding suit.
Thanks for the help.....

what kind of pipes do you have, that require wrapping instead of heat shields?
wrapping the pipes can improve performance in some cases. as exhaust gasses cool, they lose pressure and subsequently lose velocity. Maintaining heat until the gasses exit the pipe can be beneficial in some cases......there is a point where too much heat crystallizes the metal, and causes fractures though. A factory pipe with crossover will crack out. A thunderheader will breathe better
I let my mind wander.......It never came back
Yes I forgot about those crossover, they crack if you look at them funny

I am running the stock pipes... if you ask "what kind of pipes need tape instead of heat shield" you aren't running stock harley pipes. The heat shields get so hot that they melted the bottoms of my riding suit when it touched them. I had ironing board cover sewn onto them and that helped but still radiate way too much heat. After a few miles, the shields are as hot as the pipes. During the summer, I wear light pants to travel in. If they even get close to the pipes they melt. Thanks for the help

Do a stage 1 with a good tuner to fatten it up.
