Got my fuel tank solved and when I started the chopper, bike was real hard to start, it backfired badly out the exhaust at almost all speeds. Carb was rebuilt before the fuel leak was found and it ran fine after the rebuild. Idle seemed fine when warmed up. Checked the carb settings and mixture screw was 1-1/2 turn out. (S&S Super "E") It acts like the timing is way off. Don't have any obvious intake leaks either. S&S electronic ignition seems to be set at the colon mark like the website suggests. Never changed that. Bike was running real well before the tank was welded and coated. The backfiring does seem to lessen somewhat once the engine is warm. My dumbass brother hooked the jump start box to the wrong terminals for just a second. Could this have screwed up the electronic ignition module? I disconnected the battery positive to see if that would reset the module. No effect. Can this module be tested? Any suggestions or help would be greatly apperciated.

My mistake. When I got down on the floor with my glasses on, what I thought was a colon was two spots of green paint. One on the case, one on the module. They were lined up together though. It is a super stock ignition module.

The backfiring really sounds like an intake leak
Even putting new gaskets on can be an issue sometimes
If the ignition was fried I dont think it would start, also are pug wires on correct
Just some things to check

Thanks. I'll take the carb off and check it again when I get home tonight. Does that heat shield spacer ever need replacing?

The spacer just look for cracks. Those intakes can really be a bitch sealing right. You can also try spraying some carb cleaner while its running around the gasket to see if it makes a difference.
If the tank was off I would also look at crap in the fuel line that got in the carb
Run a small gas filter also if you dont already
Most likely somethign stupid here
Hope this helps

After the nipple was welded to the tank I acid cleaned it and coated it with "Kreem". New petcock and a clear plastic right angle filter. Gas should be okay now. I did rebuild the carb before I found the leak in the gas tank and it ran great before I removed the tank. I'll check those little vacuum hoses on the manifold. Maybe something got knocked off I didn't see. If that's not it I'll pull the carb again and check the spacer and the "O" ring.

Cool
Like I said sounds like something simple overlooked, happens a lot to me LOL
Good luck
