    Fuel in air cleaner

I have a recent problem with power with my 2000 FXDWG. All was well this Spring, I changed oil and was enjoying the rides. Then I filled up, and immediately the scooter was running poorly. It runs fine (starts, shifts, goes forward) but I can't go faster than about 60mph, and it is a challenge to get to 5th gear.
I thought maybe bad gas (still on that tank, though I put a gallon of premium in yesterday) but I also saw brown liquid coming from my air cleaner (not stock, but after six years, I have not had a problem with it). I took the cover off, and the filter (wire mesh) had gas in it. There is also a smaller filter below (air intake area (?)) that has gas in it.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Carb bike? If so, could be your float. Hard to say without more info.

    Yes it has a carb.
But if it was a float, wouldn't it idle crappy and run well at higher speed?

    Not necessarily.

Could also be the diaphragm on the slider. Sometimes they get dry cracks, pinholes, or just have a bad seal somewhere. If they do not hold vacuum and leak it will not open up with RPM and you run rich.
