rear brake master cylinder on 94 FXDL... why can't I just replace O rings?

The rebuild kit for my rear master cylinder (94 FXDL) is about 60 dollars... it only includes a new piston, and I was wondering why they don't seem to offer new seals (0 rings) for the piston I have.

Might seem like a dumb question which I would understand once I tear down the master cylinder, but I just thought I'd ask before ordering the kit.

My rear brake is pretty spongy until I pump it up... it'll work okay after that, but after the bike sits a while it has to be pumped up again. It's not what it should be, that's for sure.

So I'm assuming I need to rebuild the master cylinder... any advice would be appreciated.

Maybe the problem is that you can't get the seals off the old piston without cutting them off... and therefore perhaps you can't get the new seals onto the piston without trashing them ...?... just wondering why the kit assumes you need a new piston.

If it pumps up and holds then you have air in the line or moisture, Chang fluid and bleed bleed bleed

I just replace the master, I think its $5 more

Never had great success rebuilding them just not worth the effort and time involves IMO

    They are very temperamental

    10-4...

...I'll post back later. The bike's got close to 65K on it and nothing has been done to either front or rear master cylinder.

I'll try to bleed it and see how it goes...

    Thanks.

    got it fixed...

    Wide,

I took your advice and drained the old dot 5 fluid out and replaced it... and bled the system off, and it's good and firm and seems to be holding just fine. It looks like I probably don't need a master cylinder kit after all... yet, anyway.

    Thanks a bunch,

    Dan
