At 72 my engine is spinning about 3300 rpm's. Probably not too bad (you can let me know if that is okay or not) but the new bikes are all turning much slower with the 6 speed. When I get going 80 or 85 on trips out west the engine just screams.
So I was thinking it would be great to drop a couple hundred rpm's, and thought maybe there's a different belt gear or something that can be changed on the primary...
Or maybe I should just run it because 3300 - 3800 rpm's isn't too much?
Details: 01 ultra, 95", 203 cams, EFI race tuner. (Dynoed at 100 ft/lbs so it seems to be tuned pretty good.)

Just change the Belt Drive Transmission Pulley....Peace O cake.....
Andrews makes them .....
Go here and pick...there about $100 American....

Its a dog eat dog world and I'm wearin milkbone underware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i've been back where you are and have had the same wish. while it isn't hurting anything running at that engine speed (normal rpm/road speed), it gets annoying when the others are just chugging along.
anything you do gearing up the final drive will affect low speed handling. i've gone the other way and installed a 24 tooth comp sprocket, but it was worse on the top end. put the 25 back and it is ok on the bottom and better on top (stock config). baker may make a 26 tooth comp, but unknown as to whether chain/tensioner geometry is good. andrews makes 33 and 34 tooth trans sprockets (stock is 32), that might be an option. dunno the actual effect on top end though...

it is a exchange for power versus RPM usually you can have one or the other but very seldom both
I have a 02 road king and they are great out of the hole,"more so then other years" and on trips 80 mph is about 3000 on the tack , I can live with that
Bucket list are for Sissie, men do it while they can enjoy it
If I was at 3000 rpms doing 80 I'd be in heaven! I'm at 3300 at 72 mph. When I hit 80 I think it's running around 3600 rpms and oil starts blowing out.
I know I'll lose bottom end power which will suck, especially when I have a passenger and if we tow a trailer, but really that's just starting out in first gear, then I can choose a gear to be in after that.
But which is the best way to change the gearing? Trans or belt?

The best would be to go with a 6 speed. But that costs too much.
My suggestion is to leave it as is. Your motor will be happy.
I changed the pully one tooth on my 05 Roadking. I couldn't really notice the differnce and my fuel mileage didn't improve.
If you lug your motor too much you will kill it.
I almost cut my hair, it happened just the other day.
It was gettin' kinda long, I could've said it was in my way.
But I didn't and I wonder why, I feel like letting my freak flag fly
But it can't be good to run at 3300 - 3800 rpm's all the time either! Spewing oil has to be a warning sign.
Maybe I have a aftermarket gear on there increasing rpm's already. I bought this bike with 15K on the clock already. Any idea where I can find what rpm's I should be at going 60 or so?

They wind out pretty bad stock and that oil spitting out isn't caused by running at 4000 rpm.
I suggest you start a new thread about oil coming out the breather. I seem to remember junior talking about a fix for that. That oil is supposed to go in your intake and be burned up.

Well I have an oily breather that's for sure, and I had it fixed by doing some drilling you guys recommended, but then I had the big bore kit and cams installed and I get worse oil out the intake now. The Harley mechanic said there was nothing they could do... Remember mine is an 01, the weird year.... And I have the SE stage 1 intake.
But back to gearing.... What rpm range do you guys suggest I run in down the highway most of the time? Tell me that and I'll make my bike get there. Keep in mind big bore, race tuner, and two up riding often.
I'm spinning well over 3200 rpm's on trips and I know that's too high. So where do you keep your rpm's? Been reading and most seem to think 2500 to 2700 is a good cruising rpm.
