    Brake light switch failure

Was riding on Saturday and the cruise control quit working and the check engine light came on. Turns out my rear brake light switch had failed and was stuck on. I unplugged it and the check engine light went off and I had brake lights using the front brake. The only thing weird was that all the brake lights worked with the exception of the normal brake light on the fender. It seems this brake switch failing is a common thing on Harley's so if it ever happens to you just unplug one of the wires until you can get a new switch.

I had my cruise control fail a few months back. It turned out that my brake light had been on for 2 days before I discovered it. I replaced the rear brake light switch and everything is back to normal. While at the dealers a few days ago one of the service tech's told me they had a late model Ultra Classic in a couple of weeks before that the rear brake light switch had failed and caught on fire and burned part of a wire harness before the rider knew it. Imagine that!

Looks like your 2010 fell prey to the recall issue...

Mine crapped out after washing it yesterday--looks like water got in the fuse box. It wouldn't start, had no electronics till this morning when it dried out enough. Not sure what to do about it.
You ain't doin' it right if it don't burn a little.

Oh yeah hey I just saw that recall story today. Sounds like it might be your problem.

    By The Associated Press
Harley-Davidson is recalling about 308,000 motorcycles to fix a switch problem that can cause failure of the brake lights and possibly even the rear brakes themselves. brake light switches can be exposed to too much heat from the exhaust system. The brake lights can fail, and the problem also can cause fluid leaks and the loss of rear brakes.
The problem affects Touring, CVO Touring and Trike vehicles from the 2009 through 2012 model years. Harley says it will notify owners of the recall. Dealers will install a rear brake light switch kit free of charge.

I've got an appointment for next Wednesday to get the switch replaced with the SB M1310.

At least you can get it fixed free, ROR. If the "fix" fixes it, that is.
