Hard downshifting and cant find (N)

one day my wife and i were riding, i have a 96 Roadking and she has a Softail Classic we came to a stop light and we were talking waiting for the light to turn green, the clutch was in and it was in 1st gear all of a sudden the bike started to creep forward so i put the brake on, i thought it was odd, we road and it was fine, a few days later i took it out and i had to start downshifting and it was like i didnt have the clutch pulled in i couldnt downshift. on the way home it would do it then it wouldnt, i was puzzled, when i got home i went to put it in neutral and i couldnt, i never had a problem finding it and now it wont shift. i got the manual out and adjusted it to what the book said and tried it again and no luck. i called a Harley Dealer by me and i know the parts guy and he said that it could be the clutch cable so i bought one, i installed it and adjusted it to the book and the same thing is happening, when it is hot i have to rev the motor then it will downshift but i cant find neutral, if i let it cool down it goes into neutral easy. is my clutch taking a crap? any help would be great.

loosen the cable all the way. pull the derby off and you'll see a 11/16" locknut with a set screw in the middle. back the lock nut off and turn the set screw in slowly until it bottoms, then back it out 1/2-3/4 turn. while holding the set screw, secure the locknut. then re-adjust the cable.

try this first, then let us know-

thanks Wreck! i am going to go pull the durby cover again and do the adjustment again and check the tensioner and if that doesnt do it i think it has to be in the clutch itself, it only has 20,000 miles but who knows 2 years ago i had a hell of a knock everyone thought it was lifters and it turned out to be the compensator for the primary chain. so i will try this first if all else fails i will have to tare the clutch apart.

well i adjusted the primary chain to 5/8 cold and adjusted the clutch backing out 3/4 and adjusting cable to 1/8 and when i put it in 1st gear and rev the engine i dont even have to let the clutch out i can keep the bike moving so i did some research and to replace the clutch with just the kit and buying the compression tool it will cost me close to $300 and to buy a complete clutch it is $330 so it looks like i will be replacing the clutch. if anyone has anymore ideas PLEASE let me know i really hate to spend the money if it could be something else. Thanks!

well solved the problem i bought a new complete 9 plate clutch and clutch pushrod kit and it was the clutch!!!! took primary apart and had fibers and chunks of clutch in the housing, took the old clutch out and inspected it and could see brass peices in the clutch basket installed the new clutch and it shifts like a dream. my friend had a clutch compresser and i took the old one apart and OMG i found 16 peices of brass rivets from the spring plate and 4 of the spacers fell out!!!! i am lucky i didnt get killed riding the bike. so if anyone has a problem downshifting or finding neutral after doing a textbook adjusting check your clutch
