    Replaced 5ohm with 3ohm ignition coil..help pls

I recently replaced my ignition coil and wiring harness..after hooking in all the wires it all worked fine. I cranked the bike up and it ran like a champ for maybe a total of one minute..then it just died and won't start back up. Just sits there and turns over and over with no success. I got to looking and realized that I have replaced my stock 5ohm ignition coil with a 3ohm aftermarket from jp. I hooked a multimeter up to the coil later and it says 3ohms..I don't know much about electrical components yet but I was wondering if that is my problem possibly? Its all I replaced on the bike besides the wiring and all the wiring is doing fine as far as i can tell...any feedback is much appreciated as I am harley mech in the making..

Also, if I put a multimeter on the spark plug side and try to crank, shouldn't I get a reading..cause nothing happens with the multimeter or the test light on either spark plug terminal when I try to crank.

didn't say what you have, but generally 5 ohm coils are for point type ignitions, while 3 ohms are electronic systems. mismatching the components can cause primary circuit problems, but my first question is what inspired the harness and coil change?

I was having all kinda of lighting issues..burning wires sometimes..etc. its a 95 fxdwg..did I fry my system or something? Its sparking when I take the plugs out and try to fire it..tho the plugs do look pretty rough, and the coil change was brought cause one of the wires goin to it had broke and I couldn't get tthe little nut off to put a new wire on it...the little stud just kept spinning with the nut..

The best way to test the spark is to use a spark tester. It will simulate a load on the engine and give you a good idea of whether the ignition is the problem. You can buy a spark tester for around $9 at Autozone. Plug it into the plug wire and crank the engine. If it has a nice blue spark it is good. If it is not blue then it's something in the ignition. Fuel, Air, Compression, Ignition. Just do a process of elimination.

ok. the 3-ohm coil is correct for that year with either moco or aftermarket ignition. so, you say the plugs spark when you remove them and crank it over? it might then be a fuel problem that is just coincidentally happening now. quick check- put the plugs in, give the carb a shot of carb cleaner and poke it. if it fiure for a sec you've confirmed fuel. on 95's, they still had that stupid vacuum petcock. make sure that with all the fiddling going on that the petcock is on and the vacuum line hooked up. also, and i have to say it, there IS fuel in it right? (sorry)....

Haha.. i forgot to put gas in the tank. No.. im jk. I was gonna take the tank off to get a better view of all my lines. Popped the fuel line off and opened the valve.. nothing came out. It was clogged at the valve... go figure. Cleaned the clog and ed the tank out till it was clean fuel coming thru... runs like a dream. Thanks for all the help.. was just bad timing on it i guess.. lol.

Good to hear you got it figured out.

I almost cut my hair, it happened just the other day.
It was gettin' kinda long, I could've said it was in my way.
But I didn't and I wonder why, I feel like letting my freak flag fly
