    Tuesday Tuesday

    Morning all.

Some guy in DC driving around with a car seat over his head. Everyone thought it was a driverless car being tested. LOL

    Good morning WP
News stations in DC were carrying reports that an autonomous car was being tested on the streets. Eventually a reporter caught up to it and took a video of the inside and saw that their was a human in there.

here's one news report: He even uses an LED lightbar. LOL

One person who saw the van said it was driving weirdly and that the technology "on the top" of the vehicle got her attention.

It might not be a tech company behind the van. Lots of university and military researchers are based in Northern Virginia and the DC suburbs.

Mazda announced a new engine technology that is 20 to 30% more efficient. It sounds like a diesel technology that uses gasoline. It relies on compression to ignite the charge.

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/...OMK?li=BBnbfcL

The new compression ignition engine is 20 percent to 30 percent more fuel efficient than the Japanese automaker's current engines and uses a technology that has eluded the likes of Daimler AG and General Motors Co.

A homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine ignites petrol through compression, eliminating spark plugs. Its fuel economy potentially matches that of a diesel engine without high emissions of nitrogen oxides or sooty particulates.

Mazda's engine employs spark plugs under certain conditions, such as at low temperatures, to overcome technical hurdles that have hampered commercialisation of the technology.

Executive Vice President Akira Marumoto called Mazda's engine technology the automaker's "heart".

The engine is called SKYACTIV-X and Mazda had no plans to supply the engine to other carmakers, Marumoto said.

AEMSS' Miyashita said a key issue would be how smooth and responsive the engine is.

That link didn't work and I tried googling it. But I trust you know ferrari specs. That's a hella lot of pressure. When I googled, I found something about ferrari basically trying to get pressures up so high in the combustion chamber as to use auto ignition. In other words like a diesel. I suppose they use the computer to avoid pre-detonation.

With those kinda pressures they must spend a lot of thought on engineering their seals and gaskets.
